Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting time! One of the most important aspects of puppy care is ensuring they receive proper vaccinations to protect them from dangerous diseases.
Core Vaccines for Puppies
Core vaccines are essential for all puppies, regardless of their lifestyle. These vaccines protect against the most serious and common diseases.
- Rabies - Required by law, protects against fatal viral disease
- DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) - Protects against four serious diseases
- Parvovirus - Critical protection for puppies
Puppy Vaccination Schedule
Puppies need a series of vaccinations starting at 6-8 weeks of age. Here's a typical schedule:
- 6-8 weeks: First DHPP vaccination
- 10-12 weeks: Second DHPP vaccination
- 14-16 weeks: Third DHPP and Rabies vaccination
- 1 year: Booster vaccinations
- Adult: Annual or triennial boosters based on vaccine type
Keep your puppy away from unvaccinated dogs and public areas until they complete their vaccination series at 16 weeks.
Lifestyle Vaccines
Depending on your puppy's lifestyle and location, your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccines such as Bordetella (kennel cough), Leptospirosis, Canine Influenza, or Lyme disease.
After Vaccination Care
Most puppies tolerate vaccines well. Mild side effects like temporary soreness or lethargy are normal. However, contact your veterinarian if your puppy experiences severe reactions, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing.
