Orange County summers bring beautiful weather but also serious risks for pets. Temperatures regularly exceed 85°F, and pavement temperatures can reach 140°F - hot enough to burn paws and cause heatstroke. Protect your Laguna Woods pets with these essential summer safety tips.

Preventing Heatstroke in Southern California

Heatstroke kills pets quickly. Unlike humans, dogs and cats can't sweat and rely on panting to cool down - which is ineffective in extreme heat. Certain breeds (brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Persian cats), senior pets, and those with health conditions are especially vulnerable.

NEVER leave pets in parked cars - even with windows cracked. On an 85°F day, car interiors reach 120°F in minutes. This is deadly.

Signs of Heatstroke - Emergency!

  • Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
  • Drooling, thick saliva
  • Bright red tongue and gums
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Weakness, collapse, or seizures
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Disorientation or lack of coordination

If you suspect heatstroke: move pet to shade/AC immediately, apply cool (not ice cold) water to paws, belly, armpits, offer small amounts of water if alert, and rush to OC Vet Animal Hospital - call ahead so we can prepare. Heatstroke requires immediate emergency treatment.

Hot Pavement Burns

Asphalt temperatures in Orange County can reach 140°F on 90°F days. Use the 7-second test: place your hand on pavement for 7 seconds - if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws. Walk dogs early morning or evening, stick to grass or shaded areas, and consider protective dog booties.

Keeping Pets Cool in Laguna Woods

  • Provide unlimited fresh, cool water - multiple bowls throughout house
  • Ensure access to shade and air conditioning
  • Use cooling mats or damp towels for pets to lie on
  • Offer frozen treats: ice cubes, frozen Kong toys with peanut butter
  • Exercise during coolest times: before 8am or after 7pm
  • Never shave double-coated breeds - their coat insulates against heat
  • Consider kiddie pools for water-loving dogs (supervise always)

Summer Grooming Tips

Regular brushing removes dead undercoat and helps air circulation. Trim long-haired pets but never shave to the skin - dogs need coat protection from sun. Check for ticks after outdoor activities. Keep ears clean and dry, especially for swimming dogs.

Pool and Beach Safety

Not all dogs can swim - supervise always. Rinse pets after swimming to remove chlorine or salt. Provide life jackets for boating. Watch for algae blooms in lakes (toxic). Never let pets drink pool or ocean water. After beach trips to nearby Laguna Beach, rinse paws and check for cuts from shells.
