Congratulations on your new kitten! These first few months are critical for your kitten's health, development, and socialization. This complete guide from OC Vet Animal Hospital helps Laguna Woods kitten owners start off right.

Essential Supplies Before Bringing Kitten Home

  • Litter box (one per cat plus one extra) and unscented clumping litter
  • High-quality kitten food (wet and dry)
  • Food and water bowls (ceramic or stainless steel)
  • Scratching posts and cat tree
  • Interactive toys for mental stimulation
  • Soft bedding and hiding spots
  • Cat carrier for vet visits
  • Grooming supplies: brush, nail clippers

Kitten-Proofing Your Laguna Woods Home

Remove toxic plants (lilies, sago palms, azaleas), secure electrical cords, remove small objects that could be swallowed, secure window screens, remove toxic household products, and close toilet lids. Kittens are curious and can get into dangerous situations quickly.

Schedule a wellness exam at OC Vet Animal Hospital within 48-72 hours of adoption. Early health screening catches congenital problems and establishes baseline health.

Kitten Nutrition

Feed kitten-specific food (higher calories and protein than adult food) until age 1. Offer 3-4 small meals daily for kittens under 6 months, then transition to 2 meals daily. Always provide fresh water. Avoid milk (most cats are lactose intolerant) and raw diets (risk of bacterial contamination).

Litter Box Training

Most kittens instinctively use litter boxes. Show your kitten the litter box immediately upon arrival. Place kitten in box after meals and naps. Keep boxes clean (scoop daily). Use unscented litter - kittens are sensitive to strong smells. If accidents occur, clean thoroughly with enzymatic cleaner.

Kitten Vaccination and Healthcare Schedule

6-8 weeks: First FVRCP (feline distemper, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus). 10-12 weeks: Second FVRCP, FeLV (feline leukemia) if at risk. 14-16 weeks: Third FVRCP, Rabies (required in California). 12 months: Booster vaccines. Also discuss flea/tick prevention, deworming protocol, and spay/neuter timing with your Laguna Woods veterinarian.

Socialization and Behavior

Handle your kitten gently and frequently, expose to various sounds and experiences, teach appropriate play (use toys, not hands), trim nails regularly starting young, and establish routines for feeding, play, and sleep. Kittens socialized between 3-9 weeks become confident, well-adjusted adult cats.
